Making History: SWE-Commissioned Printed Art Sale for WE23!

The Los Angeles Section has collaborated with acclaimed Chicana artist (and LA-native!) Sonia Romero to create art prints for WE23! Amazingly, this is the first time in SWE’s history that a section has commissioned an artist to create “SWE Art”. Proceeds from this fundraiser will go toward endowing a memorial scholarship for Arminta Harness – past Society President and Los Angeles Section President. These are limited edition, hand-pulled silkscreen prints that will be numbered and signed by the artist!

concept statement from Sonia Romero herself: My concept here is a woman against the background of the newly finished 6th St. Bridge, from the point of view of East Los Angeles, against the skyline of Downtown LA, which is constantly under construction. The pattern on her dress is a mixture of gears (2 from the SWE logo) and computer circuits. She wears a sarape sash, which is worn culturally by Latinx people at graduations and is a symbol of education. Images of graduation and a constantly growing city are what connect “Live Without Limits”, our conference theme, to this art piece! (Note: “WE23” and the SWE logo will be on the final prints at the bottom, just below the image.)

And while you’re at the conference, check out some of Sonia’s permanent art installations around Los Angeles, or at her current show at Loyola Marymount University (LMU)!
